12" (30 cm.) Eleven highly characterized figures from Chinese opera are hand-sculpted paper mache with sculpted hair and hair ornaments, highly colored dramatic complexions to depict the character, black beaded eyes in deeply set sockets to appear as though glass, and have interior unstuffed body forms with carved wooden feet and hands designed for use at hand puppets. Condition: generally excellent, one missing the interior body form. Comments: Late 19th century, depicting figures from Chinese operas. Value Points: outstanding collection, each figures with superb sculpting and painting of feature, each wearing superb original silk costume with applique "jewels", "furs", and other rich trims.
