15" (38 cm.) Polychromed terra cotta shoulderhead of aged man with dark ruddy complexion, deeply-incised wrinkles, sculpted forelock and side curls surrounding bald pate, inset enamel eyes, strong nose, closed mouth, firmly-set jaws and chin accentuated by beard stubble, tow-wrapped armature posable body, carved wooden lower arms and legs, painted black stockings and black buckled shoes, wearing black velvet coat with gilt edging and buttons, silk trimmed vest, short silk pants, and carrying wooden violin and bow. Excellent condition. Neapolitan, late 1700s, attributed to Nicola Sangiovanni, especially notable details of sculpting and artistic painting.
