Description

Of sturdy brown pique, with horizontal ribbing, the dress features a rounded neckline above a fitted bodice that is covered by wide scalloped bretelles that fall into lappets below the waist; the same bretelles are repeated on the back side of the dress. The very full puffed sleeves are formed by box pleats at top and bottom, and are edged with narrow turned-up cuffs. There is a hidden set-in waistband above the box pleated skirt that features reverse box pleats at the center front and back and at each side. The gown is trimmed with expertly appliqued black soutache in an elaborate pattern along the bretelles, bodice front, sleeve cuffs, and around the entire skirt bottom. Appropriately sized for 16-17" Huret style poupee. Circa 1860.
