Solid domed baby head of light wax over paper mache with painted facial features, outlined blue eyes with white eye dots, closed mouth with painted teeth, original lace cap enclosing a tendril of curl at forehead, paper mache torso that encloses mechanism, metal-hinged paper mache limbs in crawling pose. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism functions well. Marks: Mechanical Creeping Baby, No. 49-S, I.B. & CO (box label with illustration of the doll). Comments: IVes & Blaeslee, Connecticut, circa 1870. Value Points: perfectly preserved with original ribbon-trimmed costume, original finish, the doll is stored in its original box with key.
