10" (25 cm.) Hollow-pressed cloth head with black painted hair in simple short curls, painted large brown eyes, lashes, accented nostrils, closed mouth, blushed cheeks, paper mache rounded hollow skirt-body that contains mechanism, brass feet. When wound, the doll "walks". Condition: generally excellent, functions well, typical craquelure on face. Marks: Patented July 15th, 1862, also in England (bottom of skirt). Comments: the American patented walking doll was made for nearly a decade with heads of various materials including bisque, china, paper mache and this rarest variation the pressed cloth doll patented by Hawkins. Value Points: rare walking doll marketed as "Autoperipatetikous" with rarest head style, factory original costume including trim.
