Description

21" (54 cm.) Stockinette cloth doll with pressed and oil painted complexion, hair and facial features, light brown tinted hair, large brown eyes in well-defined eye sockets with tinted brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth, blushed cheeks, shaped ears, stitch-jointed body with oil-painted lower arms and legs, blushed detail of finger nails and toes, wearing blue chambray romper suit. Condition: generally excellent, original paint with typical craquelure and rubs. Comments: "Sheppard Baby" sold by the J.B. Sheppard department store in Philadelphia, circa 1895; the actual maker of these dolls remains a mystery. Value Points: very fine detail of sculpting with pleasing patina, the doll is seated upon cane-seated early wooden doll chair.
