Description
18" (46 cm.) Bisque swivel head on kid-edged bisque shoulderplate, blue glass inset eyes with spiral threading, heavy eyelids, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, arched brows, accented eye corners and nostrils, closed mouth with upturned lip corners accented lips, pierced ears, ash blonde mohair wig over cork pate, muslin stitch-jointed body with leather hands, lavish antique costume including gown, undergarments, kid boots, fur muff and collar. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: G (head and shoulders). Comments: Leon Casimir Bru, his deposed smiling poupee of 1872, possibly designed as a portrait doll of Empress Eugenie, with original body by Lacmann; the head/bust may have been sold separately by Bru, intended for shipment to the American market where it was supplied with an American commercial body. Value Points: notable presence of this example of the rare smiling poupee; its slight variation of facial model is distinctive and compelling.
