Description
20" (51 cm.) The rag-stuffed black stockinette head has inset
brown glass eyes with embroidered brows,stitch-shaped nose with
thread-dotted nostrils,red stitched lips,grey fleecy wool stitched
wig,old very worn composition-jointed body with black cloth
stockinette cover. Condition: very good. Comments: American, late
19th century, the "make-do" doll perfectly encapsulates the folk
art concept, cleverly utilizing the relic pieces of an antique
commercial doll (namely, eyes and body),along with found pieces of
fabric for body cover and costume, yarn for hair. Value Points:
wonderfully-entreating expression, the untrained folk artist in her
simple attempts at facial definition and considered use of found
materials, has created an utterly charming piece, with old cotton
costume elements and antique pin "I want a home".
