Description
13" (33 cm.) Each has one-piece chip-carved head and torso,painted
complexion and facial features,brown eyes,fringed lashes,closed
mouth with defined lips,glued-on hair,fully jointed limbs with
dowel articulation at shoulders,elbows,hips and knees,and the
woman with extra string jointing at the ankles,each in nice cotton
costume. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Max (incised on
the back torso of man). Comments: from the Arkansas state artist's
projects,during Depression Era,circa 1935,designed to provide jobs
as well as inculcate arts and crafts into local communities; the
carved wooden dolls were prevalent in the Arkansas project. Value
Points: particularly rare example of W.P.A. dolls.
