Description
22" (56 cm.) (fully extended length). Each has hand-sculpted head
with textured finish depicting a different character from Chinese
theatre,each having uniquely sculpted features including
hair,mustache,eye expression,and mouth,and each with amber-tinted
complexion and original cloth hand puppet costume. Condition:
generally excellent,costume worn away on one,original painting
well preserved on all. Marks: WPA Museum Extension Project (stamp
on costumes of four). Comments: circa 1930s,created as an aspect
of the Depression Era Works Progress in which artists were given
projects aimed at developing American folk arts and customs. Value
Points: rare one-of-a-kind works with original insignias and fine
state of preservation.
