Description
26" (66 cm.) Bisque socket head, brown glass paperweight inset eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lashes and brush-stroked brows, shaded nostrils, closed mouth with shaded and outlined lips, pierced ears, brunette human hair wig over cork pate,French composition and wooden body with attached-ball jointing at shoulders, hips and knees, hinge jointing at hips allowing the doll to "walk",cut-out torso panel and original removable composition cover, internal pull-string bellows crier in torso,beautifully-costumed in rich patterned velvet with matching bonnet, undergarments, stockings and shoes. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 12 (incised on head, and artist checkmarks). Bebe Jumeau Diplome d'Honneur (body) Bebe Jumeau (raised lettering on metal horn of crier). Comments: Emile Jumeau, circa 1888. Value Points: very rare and original variation of the Bebe Parlant. Ordinarily the torso was cut horizontally at the waist for insertion of the crier and then closed permanently (see The Jumeau Book, page 266); this example has an open window with removable front cover in the manner of Bebe Phonographe (except having solid composition cover rather than pierced-metal cover) and bellows mechanism which conjoins with the hinged walking mechanism (see photo detail) that is also rare on this style of body.
