Description
12" (30 cm.) Paper-mache shoulder head with sculpted short black
hair and painted facial features,brown eyes,slender kid
body,wooden limbs. Condition: doll is very worn,dresses range from
poor to excellent. Comments: Germany,circa 1860,the doll,named
"Hattie" was owned by the young Harriet Simonds of
Franklinville,New York,who died in 1863 at the age of sixteen. To
pass the time during her invalid years,she sewed for her
doll,creating an extensive wardrobe of costumes and accessories.
Later the doll was willed to her namesake niece,Harriet
Laidlaw,who cherished the doll until her death at the age of 105.
The doll was sent to auction,passed though the hands of several
owners,and eventually came,full circle,to the home of Jean Strong
who grew up in Franklinville. It is from the collection of Jean
Strong that the doll is sold. Included are sixteen dresses,various
other costume elements,five bonnets,and accessories,along with
provenance documents.
