Description
14" (36 cm.) Paper mache shoulder head with rich black complexion
and sculpted black hair,painted large upper-glancing eyes,painted
mouth with double row of teeth, attached to original tin cylinder
body with wire rod arms, the right arm holding a small gong, and the
left arm holding a bell. When the base is turned the doll is
designed to revolve around and around, while her right arm moves up
and down, thus "ringing the bell". Structurally excellent, mechanism
needs slight adjustment,but is intact. American,circa 1880,maker
uncertain; the bell toy concept was popular during this time as
evidenced by The Gong Bell Mfg. Co. which specialized only in
mechanical bell toys.
