11" (28 cm.) Bisque socket head with distinctive modeling,heart-
shaped face and sloped nose, dark blue glass inset eyes, dark
eyeliner,dark painted curly lashes,rose-blushed eye
shadow,thickly-painted brows with feathered detailing and
decorative glaze, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth
with center line between the well-defined lips, brunette mohair
wig,Steiner composition fully-jointed body. Condition: generally
excellent. Marks: J. Steiner Paris (head, incised) (Steiner paper
label of doll with flag). Comments: Jules Steiner, circa 1890,the
model appears to be especially commissioned; only four other
models are known (two are shown in The Dolls of Jules Steiner by
Dorothy McGonagle described as an "extraordinary piece of
sculpture",and two others were in the famed collection of Dina
Vierney of Paris). Value Points: the great rarity of the doll is
superseded by its extraordinary sculpting and quality of bisque
and painting; the doll wears original French military costume and
hat.
