Description
30" (76 cm.) Solid domed paper mache shoulder head with very plump
face and well-defined double chin,black painted pate,small black
glass enamel inset eyes,heavily-lidded eyes and painted
lashes,lightly-feathered brows,accented nostrils,open mouth with
square cut upper and lower teeth,French kid poupee body with
gusset-jointing at elbows,hips and knees,and (hidden under the
lady's clothing) male body part. Condition: generally
excellent,early repaint is well done. Comments: for the French
market,circa 1860,the unusual body model follows the tradition of
the earlier French royal court dolls whose fascinating history was
related by Francois Theimer in his book Les Poupees Royales. Value
Points: charmingly presented doll with well-modeled face and
wearing wonderful antique costume,undergarments,bonnet and
shoes,along with added surprise.
