Description
9 1/2" (24 cm.) x 7" x 6". The shapely wooden box with beveled edge lid has pressed brass claw feet and ornate carrying handles,and has original painted Chinoiserie finish with ochre ground and richly designed Chinese scenes and symbols in shades of gold,red,green and brown,and with some raised designs especially of figures. The box opens to a well-fitted interior with pink lining,a back flap with a further illustration that is designed to hold papers,and a compartmented base that contains various sewing tools including ten bone tools (one a tape measure),glass pearl pins in pincushion and a set of gold tools in fitted recesses including scissors,thimble,needle case and stiletto. The tool tray lifts out for access to hidden compartment below. Excellent condition. For the English market,early 1800s.
