7" (18 cm.) x 4". The sewing or jewelry box has mother-of- pearl veneers accented by gilt frame and borders centering a miniature Balthasar Wigand watercolor painting under glass depicting Vienna尽 Spinnerin Am Kreuz legendary 15th-century tower in the foreground,with scenes of Vienna in the background,and many people and horses traveling the roads or gazing at the tower. Excellent condition. Vienna,circa 1830,with miniature watercolor by Balthasar Wigand; the box was likely created in his own atelier to commemorate the Spinnerin legend which goes as follows. During the 15th century a certain wife sat at the tower spot for many years,working her spinning wheel,and watching and awaiting for her husband尽 safe return from war. Others had advised her to forget him and marry again but she refused and continued to spin. Finally,much later,he did return,the couple were reunited,and the spinning wheel tower was built to commemorate this happy reunion.
