Vienna, circa 1830,with miniature watercolor by Balthasar
Wigand; the box was likely created in his own atelier to
commemorate the Spinnerin legend which goes as follows.
During the 15th century a certain wife sat at the tower
spot for many years, working her spinning wheel, and
watching and awaiting for her husband尽 safe return from
war. Others had advised her to forget him and marry again
but she refused and continued to spin. Finally, much
later,he did return,the couple were reunited,and the
spinning wheel tower was built to commemorate this happy
reunion.
