5" (13 cm.) x 3". The petite sewing box has mother-of-
pearl veneers accented by gilt frame and borders centering
a miniature Balthasar Wigand watercolor painting under
beveled glass depicting a lively detailed scene in
Vienna, with the historic Karl Church in the background
surrounded by numerous other buildings, and a busy street
scene with nearly 30 persons strolling the boulevard or
riding in various horse and carriages. The box opens to a
mirrored back with tri-color cord edging and a velvet base
fitted to accommodate the original gold sewing tools
within,comprising scissors with silver blades,needle
case,winder,thimble,and stiletto. Excellent condition.
Vienna, circa 1830,with miniature watercolor by Balthasar
Wigand, and the box likely created in his own atelier. The
watercolor is notable for its well-peopled scene with
minute details of costume and activity.
