Description
5" (13 cm.) x 3". The dainty sewing box with mother-of-
pearl veneers accented by gilt frame and borders that
center a miniature Balthasar Wigand watercolor painting
under beveled glass depicting the famed Tivoli Gardens of
the Schonbrunn Palace in Vienna; 22 persons enjoying tea
or viewing the gardens are included in the tiny scene. The
box opens to a mirrored back with magenta cord edging and
a velvet base fitted to accommodate the mother-of-pearl
sewing tools within,comprising scissors with silver
blades,folding knife,needle case,winder,thimble with gold
emblem of flower,and two additional tools. Excellent
condition. Vienna,circa 1830. The artist Balthasar Wigand
(1770-1846) lived his entire life in Vienna,studying at
the famed Vienna Academy. The miniature watercolor and
gouache scenes of Vienna are highly sought,notable for
exquisite detail of people,horses and even architectural
features. Additionally,he organized his own atelier which
used these miniature paintings in the creation of
decorative objects such as paperweights and sewing boxes
such as this example.
