Description
30" (76 cm.) x 24". Oil on canvas painting depicts a romanticized view of the ancient city gate of Port Capuana in Naples forming a background to a busy and interactive city scene of marketplace, children and animals at play, lively conversation, delivery carts with horses, and more, much the same scenes that were created in the Neapolitan presepio settings. Notable is the detail of every feature including costumes, shadowing, even the vegetables heaped in the overflowing baskets, while the artistÍs fascination with Baroque architecture is evident in the building details and the sense of perspective which he achieves. The painting is signed Jacqs.Carabain and is presented in original wooden gilded frame. Excellent condition. Jacques Carabain (1834-1933) was equally fascinated by architecture and cityscape life. A distinctive feature of his work was noted to be the realistic poses and interaction of persons with nearby inanimate objects, of which this painting is a superb example.
