23" (58 cm.) Pressed bisque socket head with very full cheeks and throat,defined blushed chin,oval-shaped face,brown glass paperweight inset eyes,thick dark eyeliner,painted lashes,mauve blushed eye shadow,brush-stroked and feathered brows,accented eye corners,shaded nostrils,closed mouth with defined space between the shaded and outlined lips,heart-shaped upper lip,pierced ears,hand-tied brunette human hair wig over cork pate,French composition and wooden fully-jointed body with straight wrists. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: A 12 T. Comments: Andre Thuillier,circa 1884,from the early period of his firm's production; few dolls were created each year during this time. Value Points: an especially beautiful model of the rare bebe with exemplary bisque and painting,exquisite detail of lips,original body and body finish,and wearing fine antique rose silk dress with lace trim and ivory silk sash,rose silk bonnet and stockings,undergarments,leather shoes with brown silk pom-poms. Provenance: the doll is being sold from its original family owners,first belonging to Eugenia Josephine Huwer who was born in Luneville,France in 1883,then coming to America in 1886 at the age of 3 with her parents,Emily and Alois,and sister Jeannette. According to family notes: "they made their home in Queens,New York where her father worked as a glass blower. They all taught themselves English by reading the paper and figuring out the words. Eugenia met Peter Zaun at a dance and married. She worked as an embroiderer in New York. They had one daughter,Vivian,to whom she gave the doll" and it has continued in the family until now.
