Description
9" (23 cm.) diam. box. 5" doll. A round light-wood box with early transfer-print paper cover
opens to reveal an elaborately-arrangement scene of a lady surrounded by a dream of flowers
and buds. The box is lined with woven puffy flax threads and a lady doll with papier-mache
head,hands,and feet,and cloth wrapped body,wearing exquisite rose silk dress embroidered
with matching flax threads and wearing a grand wide-brimmed silk bonnet rests in the
center,surrounded by lavish silk flowers of various species and silver tinsel. Condition:
generally excellent,paper worn on lid. Comments: probably English,early 1800s,the
imaginative craft work was popular at the time,creating fantasy arrangements such as this
which were often given as Valentine gifts. Value Points: very rare to find this uniquely-made
early Valentine art,with wonderful imaginative details. Ex-Collection Marianne Bodmer from
where it was acquired by Estelle Johnston.
