Description
6" (15 cm.) largest dolls. 15" x 26" frame. A walnut wooden shadowbox frame features a
family of five wooden Grodnertal dolls, each with carved hair and facial features, painted
complexion,painted details including tiny eyes,closed mouth,the woman with richly-swirled
curls around her face, and the man with painted moustache and goatee, along with a smaller
boy and girl with carved tuck combs, and a baby held in mother's arms. The dolls are arranged
against a background which imaginatively depicts a country home with bountiful fields of
flowers, little seashells, smoke curling from the chimney and such. Condition: generally
excellent. Comments: Grodnertal, circa 1840,the dolls; the shadowbox scene appears to be of
the same period. Value Points: an evocative scene likely composed to depict a family home
and gardens,with mother,father and three children,has been perfectly-preserved.
