Description
13" (33 cm.) h. 12" x 10". A beautifully-created country-side scene with textured-ground and
painted finish depicting a path with bridge crossing a small stream. Standing upon the path is
a papier-mache donkey with painted features and harness, upon which is side-seated a bisque
doll with cobalt blue eyes, painted features, closed mouth, blonde mohair wig,and superb
original costume, alongside her a woven basket with feathered silk flowers. The donkey is
stalled at a wooden bridge, apparently frightened to cross it,especially since a little chenille
dog is posed jumping at him from the other side. When wound, music plays, and the little girl
nods her head forward and back, pulls the reins, and smacks the donkey's side, urging him
forward. Condition: generally excellent, music and mechanism function well and charmingly.
Comments: Vichy, circa 1880. Value Points: very rare beautifully-preserved automaton with
gorgeous doll, amusing scene and action, lovely quality of music.
