Description
16" (41 cm.) Bisque socket head with very plump lower cheeks and chin, small blue glass sleep eyes, painted curly lashes, one short stroke brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with downcast pouting expression, blonde human hair with coronet of braids and flowers, composition and wooden fully-jointed toddler body with well-defined musculature of chubby limbs, wonderful antique costume. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 231 Fany (script) A 3 M. Comments: Marseille, circa 1915, the model was inspired by the 16th century sculpture of a young child by Flemish artist, Francois Duquesnoy whose works were enjoying a popular revival in the early 1900s. The Duquesnoy sculpture was the inspiration for Kammer and Reinhardt's 115 model (see lot #33), Kathe Kruse first series character doll, and this example, "Fany", by Marseille, each of which were presented within a few years of each other. Value Points: an outstanding example of the rare "Fany" model.
