21" (53 cm.) Solid-domed wax-over-papier-mache shoulder head with slightly-elongated throat,brown enamel eyes,dark upper eyeliner,fringed lashes,feathered brows,accented nostrils and eye corners,slightly parted lips with two rows of tiny teeth,brunette human hair with elaborate loop-braided coiffure,unusual original commercial body comprising padded (tacked on) linen-over-solid-papier-mache upper torso with shapely bosom,pink kid lower torso with shapely waist and derriere,white kid slender elongated arms with stitched and separated fingers. Condition: generally excellent,line in wax at nose bridge,two wax lines at back shoulder plate,body is especially sturdy and original,and finish is all original with good coloring. Comments: maker unknown,body style and teeth construction indicate French production,circa 1850,although original waxed head technique is very rare. Value Points: very rare doll in wonderfully-preserved condition,with unique original body,superb original very elaborate folklore costume,leather slippers with velvet leg bands and coiffe of Southern Italy,possibly of the region of Basilicata.
