Description
11" (28 cm.) doll. 15" x 16" box. A wooden box with glass front is formed into a small chapel
garden centered by a papier-mache doll with solid domed shoulder head, painted black
pate, painted features, blue eyes, closed mouth, waring original grey linen habit with coiffe. The
walls are lavishly covered to simulate moss-covered stonework with decorative
flowers, leaves, birds and other nature objects. A wooden cabinet has faux-ivory medallions
and is laden with porcelain candle sticks, matching flower pots, and other ephemera and tiny
sea shells are scattered on the ground. Most curiously, attached to the walls are two sepia
vintage photographs of man and women. The box, which was formed of an old wooden store
crate still has original "Felix Potin Chocolates Paris" stenciling, and has blue marbled paper on
the exterior walls with decorative gold paper edging. A poignant and curious scene whose
background story is a mystery. Circa 1865,French.
