Very Fine Pair of Early German Papier-Mache Sister Dolls with Rare Coiffures

14" (36 cm.) Each has papier-mache shoulder head with elaborately-sculpted black hair arranged with three thick horizontal rolled curls at each side of face enhanced with scalloped detail,and thick interwoven loops at the back crown,painted facial features,blue eyes,black eyeliner,brush-stroked brows,accented nostrils and eye corners,closed mouth,blushed cheeks,slender kid body with wooden lower arms and legs,wearing matching gowns and multi-layered undergarments. Condition: generally excellent,one has re-glue at wooden ankle and light old retouch on shoulder plate craquelure. Comments: Germany,circa 1840,although identical models,the dolls have slight,yet enchanting,variation of hair style and facial expression that is achieved by subtle painting details of hair and eyes. Value Points: rare to find sister dolls with original costumes,the dolls were acquired by Estelle Johnston from the esteemed early collection of Estelle Winthrop.
