Description
12" (30 cm.) High-domed felt head has inset glass downcast googly eyes,painted high
brows,unusual flat-front nose,applied stuck-out unruly whiskers and stitched ears,elongated
throat,muslin torso and limbs except felt hands and feet,wearing original black felt cap,leather
collar,silk tie,felt jacket and trousers. Condition: generally excellent,slight dustiness. Marks: Tom
Webster's George Reg'd (label on jacket) Hygienic Toys made in England Chad Valley (label on
foot). Comments: Chad Valley,late 1920s,inspired by the character,George,from the popular Tom
Webster sporting cartoons that appeared in the London Daily Mail of that era. A fascinating
biography of Webster appears online in British Cartoon Archives. Value Points: very rare
character,with two cloth labels,and delightfully-amusing features.
