17" (43 cm.) Solid domed papier-mache shoulder head of slender-faced lady,painted facial
features,azure blue eyes,black upper eyeliner,feathered brows,accented nostrils of aquiline-
shaped nose,closed mouth,prim lips,brunette human hair chignon captured in lace cap that
fits tightly to her head,pink-kid firmly-stuffed poupee body with shapely torso. Condition:
generally excellent. Comments: French,circa 1850,the doll wears her original folklore costume
of the village of Bourg-de-Batz in Brittany,which includes a gold metallic bodice and
sash,three-part coiffe,embroidered red wool stockings,purple velvet skippers to match the
dress and even a bouquet of flowers at her waist; a near duplicate costume is shown in
Florence Theriault's French Dolls in Folklore Costume,page 65. Value Points: rare early doll
and costume in flawlessly-preserved original condition,with beautiful face and painting. The
doll bears a blue ribbon award from 1998 UFDC convention.
