8" (20 cm.) Each has solid domed papier-mache head with painted complexion and facial feature,firmly-padded torso and wooden legs and feet,wire upper arms,wooden hands,painted black shoes with twill-wrapped accents. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French,circa 1850,the dolls are wearing original military costumes featuring Zouave soldier with applied beard and moustache,attached turban and classic uniform,rifle and scabbard; and Vivandiere woman who served water and supplies to the soldiers,wearing her traditional costume and with canteen,ladle and cup; the persons were celebrated for their presence in the Crimean War of mid-1850s. Value Points: rare dolls to find in original costumes,these especially fine with original accessories,and as a pair. The dolls were featured in an article "Pleasure in Pairs" by Estelle Johnston in Doll News,May 1986.
