Description
10" (25 cm.) x 10" x 9" cabinet. A metal-framed rosewood-base cabinet with four glass sides
depicts an intimate salon setting featuring a pair of dolls seated on a silk-covered settee
behind a table laden with fine early sewing and decorative novelties,a woven carpet on the
floor and an early framed engraving on the back wall. The dolls each feature kidskin heads
with painted features, original mohair wigs in elaborate coiffure, and original attached
costumes and accessories, the woman posed as though doing needlework, the man, costumed
as soldier, reading from a miniature book. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: in the
early 1800s C.H. White of Portsmouth,England presented a series of peddler dolls made
identically to this pair, and it is likely that he also presented this vignette which includes many
of the charming miniature objects found on the original peddler dolls. Value Points: rare and
wonderfully-preserved romantic era vignette.
