21" (53 cm.) All-cloth doll with firm-pressed stockinette head,painted brown hair with delicate
feathering around the forehead,large brown eyes in defined eye sockets,arched brows,accented
nostrils,closed mouth,very full cheeks,blushed ears,stockinette stitch-jointed body with oil-
painted lower arms and legs,separate thumbs,wearing white pique romper suit,leather ankle
boots. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: American,circa 1880,the doll is known as
Sheppard or Philadelphia Baby,in reference to its origin from the J. B. Sheppard department store
of Philadelphia. Value Points: pristine condition of the rare American doll with realistic press-
sculpting and most artistic painting of features.
