9" (23 cm.) Solid domed paper mache head with dowel-attachment shoulder plate,black
enamel eyes,painted features,closed mouth,muslin midriff with bellows crier,muslin upper
legs,wooden legs and arms,paper mache hands and feet loosely-attached to simulate infant
movements,antique baby gown and bonnet. Condition: generally excellent,original finish with
some feature fading. Comments: Germany,circa 1860 the taufling baby was inspired by the
Japanese Ichimatsu baby introduced at the London International Exhibition of 1851,and this
model bears a remarkable resemblance. The doll is considered the inspiration for the classic
child doll or bebe that followed. Value Points: sought-after and most appealing doll with
historical significance; the doll is presented in an antique highchair,and owns an antique
bone-handled rattle.
