13" (33 cm.) Depicting an aged man and woman,each of the two dolls has chip-carved socket head with highly-stylized features including pronounced chin and nose,carved definition of hair,simple dowel-jointing at shoulders,elbows,hips and knees,defined fingers,painted shoes. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Pleasant Hill Academy Crafts (original paper tag on each). Comments: the Pleasant Hill Academy was founded in that town in Tennessee in the early-19th century and operated until 1947; its purpose was to offer broad liberal arts education for rural youth,as well as serving as a training school in local Appalachian skills,such as wood carving; the dolls were likely created in the training classes of the schools during the early-20th century. Value Points: rare dolls,especially with original labels,and wearing their original costumes.
