Description
12" (30 cm.) Crudely-chip carved wooden doll with highly-characterized facial
features,pronounced nose,dour lip lines,painted eyes with close brows as though
scowling,black painted hair,softly-stuffed muslin body,wooden lower limbs with defined
fingers and shoes,cotton print under dress,cotton bonnet,long striped cotton dress.
Condition: one foot chipped,dress spotted. Comments: American,early 20th century. Value
Points: included with the doll is a letter dated 1941 which says (in part) "A lady living up in the
mountains of North carolina with a pocket knife whittles the doll out of rhododendron root
that is like wood you know...they are rather crude and sort of homely...they are all dressed in
different ways just whatever kind of material she happens to have so no two are alike. The
first doll she sent me she said "This is the way I dress Ella" so I call mine Ella and so does
everyone Ive sent one to so you can call yours Ella if you want..."
