9" (23 cm.) Solid-domed bisque socket head,painted black hair in short boyish bobbed fashion with detail of stippled hair at the forehead,painted brown side-glancing eyes,black one-stroke wavy brows,closed mouth with impish smile,five-piece paper mache body with painted shoes and socks,cotton costume. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 31-12/0. Comments: inspired by the storybook character,Max,first popular in 19th century Germany from the books by Wilhelm Busch,and re-popularized in America during the early 1900s from the comic strip series The Katzenjammer Kids. Value Points: rare little fellow with well-modeled features and hair,original body and factory costume.
