Description
9" (23 cm.) A wax-head doll with painted facial features and wooden limbs is posed upon her
original wooden stand,wearing a lavish "costume" made entirely of shells in a variety of
colors,and carrying a basket and bouquet of silk and shell flowers that she appears to be
peddling. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French,mid-19th century,the shell-
costumed dolls were produced along the Brittany coast during winter months when ships were
harbored,and eventually became a recognized art form. Value Points: fine artistry detail includes
differentiation of shell colors to define the separate costume elements such as her apron.
Included is a wooden framed chair with (frail) silk upholstery and shell ornamentation.
