Description
12" (30 cm.) Each of seven dolls has a paper mache
head with painted hair and facial features
including mustaches,wrapped armature body,cloth
hands. Condition: generally excellent. Marks:
Fabrication Francaise Jouets Tisses E.L. (tag on
sleeve of several). Par Albert Guillaume (paper
label in shape of French flag on several).
Comments: The set,depicting French colonial and
Allied forces of WWI were designed by the French
artist,Albert Guillaume,circa 1916,produced by the
French doll firm of Emile Lang,and offered for
sale in leading Paris department stores of the WWI
era,intended to stir patriotic fervor.
Guillaume,the artist,was preeminent in poster art
during the 1890 Belle Epoque,and like other
artists of his era such as Poulbot and Marque,used
his talents to design dolls that aided in the
preservation of French culture. Value Points:
extremely rare set of dolls with original costumes
and labels,that are near-perfectly preserved.
