Description
17" (43 cm.) h. x 13"w. x 11"d. A fine cabinet
with inlay designs and rosewood finish has a
silver inlay medallion on the front with the
inscribed initial "C" and working key. The
interior is shelved,containing 28 different sample
cards,9" x 11",of heavy card stock with decorative
papers and edging,each card with an attached
sample of needlework as accomplished by a young
lady to prove her needlework skills. Each card
also bears a paper label identifying the work in
fine calligraphy along with die-cut lithograph
decoration. The calligraphy is in French and
includes such delightful titles as "descente de
lit" (bedside rug),and "bavette soutache" (bib
with soutache embroidery). The cards include
samples of various stitches and embroidery,as well
as actual models of doll clothing. Excellent
condition,beautifully-preserved in a custom
cabinet. French,circa 1860.
