Description
23" (57 cm.) Papier-mache socket head with painted
clown features on its face,blue glass inset
eyes,painted lashes and brows,open mouth,row of
teeth,composition body jointed at shoulders and
hips. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 7
(red stamp). Comments: French,circa 1910,the doll
described as "Pierrot articule" was presented in
the 1910 SFBJ catalog with an illustration in this
exact costume,and offered in seven sizes,this
being the rare next-to-largest size; the doll was
advertised as "pouvant se laver" (able to be
washed) although thankfully,this one isnÞt. Value
Points: rare-to-find doll,especially in this
size,is perfectly preserved with original
finish,and wearing original ivory and rose silk
Pierrot costume with silver-covered buttons
felt-flannel cap with silk pom-poms,and cream
kidskin slippers with silk pom-poms.
