18" (46 cm.) Papier-mache shoulder head with slightly-modeled bosom,black sculpted hair with formed ringlet curls in front of each highly-sculpted ear,and a coiled-braid chignon at the back of her head,painted brown downcast eyes,upper eyeliner,painted lower lashes,lightly-fringed brows,accented nostrils,closed mouth,original crudely-formed hand-stitched muslin body with stitched and separated fingers. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: circa 1820,the doll was made for the French market,appearing in its old box with French lettering "Poupee Italienne" in reference to its costume. Value Points: very fine and rare early doll with exceptional and unusual detail of sculpting of ears,neatly-shaped nose,wearing extraordinary original costume with early transfer-print designs on skirt,exquisitely-embroidered apron,earrings,and coiffe.
