20"(51 cm.) Composition head with sculpted brown hair in a neatly-side-parted style,painted
brown eyes with black outline,feathered brows,red eyeliner,fringed brows,accented
nostrils,hinged jaw with painted teeth,wire monocle,cloth stitch-jointed body with
composition gloved hands and feet with sculpted black shoes,wearing original black woolen
formal suit with silk lapels,shirt,vest,bow tie,and Charlie McCarthy celluloid buttons.
Condition: excellent,unplayed with. Marks: Edgar Bergen Charlie McCarthy an Effanbee Product
(head). Comments: Edgar Bergen (1903-1978) was an actor and ventriloquist whose career
began in vaudeville,and then moved on to radio when he,astonishingly,was able to create an
ventriloquist illusion of reality without visuals,simply by sound and superb comic skills and
timing,to amazing success for the nearly 20 years he was on the air. Value Points: superbly-
preserved condition of the doll,autographed "To Billie,Edgar Bergen"on his vest hidden under
his jacket,with original box having illustration of Bergen and McCarthy,and autographed on
the box lid.
