26"(66 cm.) All cloth doll with mask-pressed face,painted facial features,brown downcast eyes
with black and brown eyeliner,dark brown brows,closed mouth with accented lips,painted
moustache,brown mohair wig,cloth stitch-jointed body with elongated limbs,wearing original
black wool formal suit with vest,shirt and bow tie,and having a button reading "Lucky Star
Button,John Gilbert". Condition: generally excellent. Comments: circa 1925,maker
unknown,the doll depicts John Gilbert (1897-1936),star of silent films such as "Heart ?O the
Hills"with Mary Pickford,and "The Big Parade"which,in 1925,was became the second highest
grossing silent film. Value Points: aptly-rendered portrait of the silent film star,included is an
early studio photograph of Gilbert with the autograph "For Claire,My mother and
sweetheart,Always,Jack"(with a notation on the reverse side that Claire was his mother in "The
Big Parade"),another autographed photograph of Gilbert in his "The Big Parade"costume,a rare
theatre book for "The Big Parade",and a copy of Screen Secrets,August 1929 with an article
titled "John Gilbert,My Real Life Lover".
