Description
27"(69 cm.) Hard composition shoulderhead depicting a slender-faced woman with sculpted
short brown hair and aviator helmet, painted brown eyes with strong brown eyeliner, lashes and
brows, closed mouth in smiling expression with row of teeth, elongated muslin body in the
salon-doll style with composition hands, wearing costume that is most likely original including
knicker trousers with argyle stockings, leather shoes, white shirt with black tie and a knit
sweater with its original label "Le Perroque Societe,l'Arlequil,6 rue Duhesme,Paris". Condition:
generally excellent, original finish. Comments: the doll portrays Ruth Elder,American aviator
and star of the silent film,"Moran of the Marines"who, one year after Lindbergh, was determined
to be the first woman to cross the Atlantic in her plane named "American Girl"; Elder's interest
in fashion was significant and in her studio photographs promoting "Moran of the Marines"she
emphasized that flying costumes could be fashionable, perhaps an explanation for the stylish
costume of the doll. The Paris night club "Le Perroque",located at the Casino de Paris was the
in club for Paris chic society and as a promotion,in 1924,gave each lady a dressed salon
poupee as a souverneir. This doll may be one example. Value Points: very rare doll with
superb sculpting and well-preserved condition.
