Description
38" (97 cm.) x 32" framed. Superbly-rendered painting under glass depicts a semi-profile of
Rudolph Valentino in his signature costume from the film "Monsieur Beaucaire",with fine
details of medallions, textiles, and coiffure. The painting is in its original frame with bronze
label "Rudolph Valentino 1895-1926,as Monsieur Beaucaire,Painted by Gaston Albert
Lavrillier",and the painting is signed by Lavrillier in the upper right corner. Lavrillier, born and
studied in France, came to the Los Angeles area during the 1920s where he met with Valentino
who agreed to sit for the portrait; the renowned artist is recognized not only his paintings but
also for his sculpting. The painting was acquired by Ivan Dujan shortly after the death of
Valentino and remained in his possession until the late 1970s when it was acquired at auction
by Billie Nelson Tyrrell; a newspaper clipping concerning that auction is included with the
painting. In a perfect state of preservation, with original frame. Circa 1925.
