Description
14"(36 cm.) All-composition doll with sculpted brown hair having forehead bangs and a high
topknot,large brown sleep and side-glancing googly eyes,painted upper lashes,"O"shaped
closed mouth,five-piece body, wearing factory-original blue cotton dress with "duck in the
rain"print, ruffled collar, undies, socks and roller skates. Condition: generally excellent, eyes
slightly faded. Marks: Naughty Sue c. 1937 Horsman (head). Comments: Naughty Sue was
released by Horsman in 1937 along with a companion,Naughty Roberta (with different
mold),and according to the publicity given the dolls by Horsman they expected a major
success. Considering the rarity of the doll,it seems apparent this did not happen. The Naughty
series may have been inspired in some way,by the wildly-successful 1935 film,"Naughty
Marietta". Value Points: fine original condition of the rare doll with wonderful wide-eyed
expression, original costume, and original paper label "Whatsit Dolls,A Genuine Horsman
Doll"with information on the reverse about obtaining a free stamp album with 96 Whatsit
stamps.
