19"(48 cm.) Wax portrait head with short blonde sculpted curly hair,painted blue side-
glancing eyes,closed mouth,armature body with original uniquely designed crepe paper
costume,and with early celluloid pin of Marion Davies,original wooden stand. Condition:
generally excellent. Marks: The Art Shop (gilt paper label). Comments: circa 1920s,depicted is
the early silent film star,Marion Davies,from a series of wax portrait dolls of Hollywood silent
film stars,commissioned exclusively for The Art Shop of the Ambassador Hotel in Los
Angeles,home of the Coconut Grove night club which was the place to be seen for 1920s
celebrities; the dolls were sold in the gift shop and also,according to oral tradition,were used
as centerpieces on Coconut Grove tables when the celebrity attended. Value points:
beautifully-sculpted and well-preserved unique doll.
