Description
A wax-head doll is posed upon a wire-framed crepe-paper covered sled that is arranged upon
a cotton puff of snow. Her head is raised and turned sideways as though in delight, and while
her right hand holds the sled reins, her left arm is raised in triumph, having beautifully-
sculpted curly strawberry-blond hair, left glancing brown painted eyes with pronounced taupe
eye shadow, closed mouth modeled as though open with a row of painted teeth, padded
armature body with crepe paper snow-suit costume. Condition: wax head excellent, costume a
tad faded. Marks: The Art Shop,Ambassador Hotel. Comments: circa 1920s,a series of wax
dolls representing silent film stars of the era were created, each wearing a costume
emblematic of a popular film in which they starred. The dolls were sold exclusively at the
prestige Ambassador Hotel gift shop,The Art Shop, and were often used as centerpieces in the
hotel's Coconut Grove night club, the "in"spot of the decade. Value Points: beautifully-
preserved doll of an important era in social history; who she represents remains a mystery.
