Description
14"(36 cm.) Composition flanged head with sculpted hair arranged with painted red head
band and two holes for insertion of ribbons, painted features, blue side-glancing eyes, black
upper eyeliner,V-shaped brows, mouth modeled closed but with wide beaming smile and two
rows of teeth, muslin body with disc-jointing at shoulders and hips, wearing red cotton
dress, scarf and bloomers that seem original. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: (illegible
mark on torso). Comments: portrait doll of the actress Rose Melville (1873-1946) in her stage
role of "Sis Hopkins"from popular touring play of "Zeb",which was finally filmed in 1919. Sis
was evidently popular even before the film because this Amberg doll was created c. 1912,and
a "Motion Picture Magazine"of May,1916 features her on the front cover (included with the
doll). Value points: very rare doll and fascinating American memorabilia.
